Island Imagery

This is an island
with the brilliance of the lagoon
a reef out in the sea
                       still as a mountain lake

The dazzling beach
blue of all shades and shadowy green and purple
bright with the efflorescence of tropical weed and coral

Decaying coco-nuts and palm saplings
darkness of the forest platform of pink granite thrust up uncompromisingly
     upheavals of fallen trees

The forest stirred, roared, flailed.

When Hope First Appeared at my Doorsteps

“When Hope First Appeared at my Doorsteps” – by Cara Jin A strange knocking on my door awoke me from a deep slumber. Groggily, I walked to the front of the house and opened the door. Standing at the doorway was no one. As I shut the door, something came in the doorway. A white mist swirled around the room and started to ascend the spiraling staircase. It wanted me to follow it. I was afraid of it and glued myself to the door. But it kept beckoning me to follow it. It led me to my room and knocked a picture off of my bookshelf. It was a picture of me as a child, smiling happily as if nothing in the world was wrong. With a poof, the white mist vanished. Before it went, It spelled out “H-O-P-E” in the form of a cloud. I picked up the picture and smiled back at myself. That was the day when hope first appeared at my doorsteps.
